‘Going to be a lot of problems’ — Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer put on notice as Marcus Spears issues blunt warning

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer faces growing pressure after a disappointing start to the 2026 NFL season. Former NFL defensive tackle Marcus Spears believes Monday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles could become a defining moment in Schottenheimer’s tenure.

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Spears questioned whether the Cowboys coach could recover if Dallas suffered another defeat. The Cowboys entered the game with a 2-4 record after consecutive losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

“I think tonight we’ll either get Brian Schottenheimer fired after this season or he’ll continue to try to impress the rest of the way,” Spears said. “… preseason-wise, we look like this was supposed to be one of those teams vying for a playoff run and doing it.”

“We knew that they had some things on defense and they had to get better. You and I talked about that, but nobody had in the cards this offense looking as bad as it has looked over the last two weeks.

“So I think Brian Schottenheimer, this is a line of demarcation for him, to be honest with you.”

Dallas has struggled offensively over its last two games, raising concerns about a unit expected to carry the team. The Cowboys entered the season with playoff ambitions, but their recent performances have fallen short of those expectations.

Spears believes the team’s offensive struggles have placed Schottenheimer under particular scrutiny. As a former offensive coordinator, the head coach was expected to maintain the unit’s production while addressing the defense’s weaknesses.

Marcus Spears questions Cowboys’ coaching decision

Spears also pointed toward team owner Jerry Jones when discussing the situation. He argued that Jones must accept responsibility for appointing a head coach without previous NFL head-coaching experience.

“Jerry has no one to blame but himself because, you know, you took a chance on a coach that hasn’t been a head coach in this league before,” Spears said.

Schottenheimer led Dallas to seven wins last season, but the team has struggled to build momentum this year. Its 2-4 start has intensified questions about the coaching staff and the team’s direction.

Spears stopped short of predicting an immediate dismissal. Instead, he suggested the Eagles game could become a turning point when the season is reviewed.

“I don’t think he can afford to lose this game and go back to Dallas with the idea that, hey, we just got to get ready for next week,” Spears added.

“It’s going to be a lot of problems if he loses this game, and I’m not talking about after the game, he’s going to get fired. But I think at the end of the season, this will be a game we reflect back on and say whether it was either a change in Dallas as far as this particular season goes or this is why Brian is not there anymore.”

The Cowboys need a strong response against their division rivals. Another defeat could increase pressure on Schottenheimer and shape the conversation about his future in Dallas.
