Sergei Bobrovsky makes honest admission after Maple Leafs’ loss to Flames

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky offered an honest assessment after his team suffered a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Monday night. The veteran acknowledged areas he could improve but insisted Toronto still had opportunities to win.

Calgary secured its fourth consecutive victory, ending the Maple Leafs’ four-game winning streak in the early 2026-27 NHL season. Matvei Gridin scored twice, while Mikael Backlund added a goal to help the Flames take control early.

Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots but conceded three goals before Calgary added two empty-netters. Gridin beat him with two impressive shots into the top corners, including a power-play goal early in the second period.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Bobrovsky stood by his overall performance while admitting he could have been sharper.

“I thought I played a good, solid game. He made a couple of good shots, and I could’ve been positioned a bit sharper, but we had a chance to win,” Bobrovsky said.

The goaltender also urged his teammates not to dwell on the defeat. Toronto had won four straight games before struggling against Calgary’s disciplined approach.

“I don’t think we have to be frustrated. We have a good group of guys here,” Bobrovsky said. “We just have to regroup, recover, and get ready for the next game.”

Maple Leafs look to regroup after defensive mistakes

Head coach Jim Hiller pointed to turnovers as a major problem in Toronto’s performance. The mistakes helped Calgary build an early advantage and forced the Maple Leafs to chase the game.

“Turned the puck over way too much,” Hiller said about the Leafs’ issues in the loss. “I thought, over the last four games, we’d taken that out of our game. It was there in spades tonight and you can’t win in the League if you do that, and we saw that.”

Despite the deficit, Bobrovsky praised Toronto for continuing to compete rather than abandoning its structure.

“They played a pretty good, disciplined game and we put ourselves in a deficit,” he said. “Three goals, it’s tough to recover, but I thought that guys did a great job.”

He added that, “We didn’t open up in the third, we didn’t cheat the game. That’s the big sign.”
