Jorge Jesus calls Cristiano Ronaldo a ‘global icon’ after Portugal retirement

Jorge Jesus has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following the forward’s decision to retire from international football. The Portugal captain announced his departure after 23 years representing his country.

Ronaldo confirmed the decision through an emotional social media message. The 41-year-old will return Portugal’s famous No. 7 shirt after the November international break.

His retirement ends an international football career that produced 234 appearances and 146 goals. Both figures stand as records in men’s international football.

Jesus, who recently had a reported disagreement with Ronaldo over his role in the national team, praised the forward’s influence. The coach described him as an example for Portugal and its younger players.

“Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team,” Jesus said.

He also revealed that he had placed a large photograph of Ronaldo inside the team’s auditorium. Jesus wanted young players to see the forward’s achievements every day.

“I had a huge photo of him put up in our auditorium so that all the young players could look up to him every single day,” he added.

Jesus admitted that he wanted Ronaldo to continue representing Portugal. However, he accepted that the decision belonged to the veteran forward.

“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side,” Jesus said. “But I have to accept his decision.”

The coach also stressed that Ronaldo’s place in Portuguese football would remain untouched.

“He will always have a place in the hearts of the Portuguese people. He will always be an icon of Portuguese football,” Jesus added.

Ronaldo leaves behind a remarkable international record and several major trophies. He helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
