Browns’ Shedeur Sanders gets unexpected opportunity after Deshaun Watson injury update

Shedeur Sanders could get another chance to lead the Cleveland Browns after Deshaun Watson entered the NFL‘s concussion protocol.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Sanders is next in line to start Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

“With Deshaun Watson in concussion protocol, Browns QB Shedeur Sanders is next in line to start on Sunday’s game vs. the Saints,” Schefter wrote on X.

Watson’s latest injury update has created an unexpected opportunity for Sanders. The veteran quarterback suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit during Sunday’s 27-6 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

An unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant initially evaluated Watson during the game. He passed the examination and returned on Cleveland’s next offensive series.

The Browns’ medical staff also evaluated him after the game and Monday morning. Watson showed no symptoms during either examination and received clearance.

However, Watson reported concussion symptoms Monday night. The team immediately placed him in the league’s concussion protocol on Tuesday morning.

“On Tuesday morning, he reported to the medical staff that he began experiencing concussion symptoms Monday night and was immediately placed in the concussion protocol,” Browns shared in their official statement.

His availability for Sunday’s matchup now remains uncertain. Watson must complete the required clearance process before returning to action.

Shedeur Sanders could receive another starting opportunity

Sanders now stands next in Cleveland’s quarterback plans if Watson cannot play. The former Colorado quarterback entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2025.

He started seven games during his rookie season after Dillon Gabriel suffered an injury. Sanders finished that campaign with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

His role changed this season after Watson returned to the starting lineup. Sanders has made only brief appearances in two games, completing all three attempts for two yards.

Sunday could offer him another chance to show Cleveland what he can provide. However, the Browns must prepare their offense for either quarterback.

Watson’s recovery will determine the final decision. If he cannot clear the protocol, Sanders could take over against New Orleans.
