‘Country should not divide’ — Bruno Fernandes sends strong message on Cristiano Ronaldo amid Portugal tensions

Bruno Fernandes has urged Portugal to remain united amid the growing tension surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus.

Fernandes addressed the situation after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen. The Manchester United midfielder said players are aware of the reports but remain outside the dispute.

“We are completely outside the matter. We are aware of what you are saying and what we are seeing,” Fernandes said, via Fabrizio Romano.

Ronaldo’s departure followed a difficult period with Jesus. The Portugal captain was reportedly unhappy after being left on the bench during the team’s 2-1 win over Norway.

That decision reportedly intensified disagreements between Ronaldo and Jesus over his role and workload. Ronaldo subsequently left camp after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

Calls for Portugal to stay united amid Cristiano Ronaldo situation

Fernandes stressed that the situation should not divide Portuguese football supporters.

“But what I think, once again, is that the country should not divide itself, that people should not take sides, and that we should experience all of this as one,” Fernandes said.

His comments come as Portugal faces increased attention over Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus. The veteran forward also suggested that he would eventually explain the circumstances behind his departure.

Fernandes, however, made clear that Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal extends beyond the current dispute.

“We should respect and accept all sides,” Fernandes said. “But at the same time, as I said, Cris is and will always be the greatest icon of our national team, our football and also world football.”

Ronaldo remains one of Portugal’s most important players and the national team’s all-time leading scorer. His status with the squad has become a major talking point with competitive fixtures continuing.

Fernandes has now taken on additional leadership responsibilities within the team. He has also spoken directly with Ronaldo during the situation.

Rather than adding to the controversy, Fernandes chose to emphasize unity. His message reflects the need for Portugal to keep its focus on the team while the dispute involving Ronaldo and Jesus develops.
