The Edmonton Oilers have made a goaltending move after placing Devon Levi on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. The decision leaves Edmonton short on options in the crease as the team awaits further information about Levi’s condition.
Levi sustained the injury during Edmonton’s 6-5 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. He completed the game with 22 saves, but concerns emerged after he appeared to favor a lower-body area late in the third period.
The Oilers have not officially identified the injury. Levi’s placement on injured reserve means he must miss at least seven days, leaving his return timeline uncertain.

Head coach Mike Babcock previously admitted he had not received an update from the team’s medical staff. His comments suggested Edmonton was still working to determine the extent of the situation.
“Any updates on Devon Levi’s situation?” a reporter asked.
“No. We should have it but I haven’t talked. And we might even have it but I haven’t talked to our trainers yet,” Babcock responded.
When asked whether the Oilers needed another goalie, Babcock acknowledged the possibility.
“I think we do. We are going with Jarry anyway, that was the schedule. But we have already called somebody up,” he said. “So, I just assume, but I haven’t heard what’s going on.”
Oilers turn to Matt Tomkins amid goalie concerns
Edmonton has recalled Matt Tomkins from its AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, under emergency conditions. Tristan Jarry is expected to handle the starting duties while Levi remains sidelined.
The situation is complicated by Frederik Andersen’s existing placement on injured reserve. With two goaltenders unavailable, Tomkins’ arrival provides additional depth during a busy stretch.
The Oilers have started the 2026-27 NHL season strongly, posting an 8-1-1 record through their first 10 games. Their latest victory extended their winning streak to three games.

However, maintaining that momentum will require dependable goaltending. Edmonton faces the Toronto Maple Leafs next, making Levi’s status an important storyline as the team prepares for its upcoming schedule.
Until the Oilers provide further medical details, the extent of Levi’s injury and his return date remain unknown.
