Auston Matthews calls out Maple Leafs’ veterans after loss to Islanders

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has called for greater urgency from the team’s veterans after Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders.

The defeat marked Toronto’s third consecutive loss and fourth in its last five games. With the Maple Leafs struggling to find consistency, Matthews believes the responsibility starts with him and the team’s experienced players.

Speaking after the game, Matthews stressed that Toronto cannot afford to wait for its problems to resolve themselves.

“Yeah, well, we need urgency,” Matthews said. “The games are just going to keep coming and, you know, we’ve got to just be better in all areas, starting with myself, starting with the leaders and veterans on this team.”

The captain acknowledged that the experienced players must deliver more as Toronto enters an important stretch of its schedule.

“I think we’ve all got another level to show for, and this is an important week of games, obviously, and then we’re going back on the road,” Matthews added.

His comments come as Toronto searches for answers after consecutive defeats against Buffalo and New York. The Maple Leafs surrendered a two-goal lead against the Sabres before struggling offensively against the Islanders.

Maple Leafs need a response from their leaders

New York controlled much of Saturday’s contest, with Anthony Duclair opening the scoring in the first period. Bo Horvat doubled the Islanders’ advantage late in the second before Colton Sissons briefly brought Toronto back within one.

However, Simon Holmstrom restored New York’s two-goal lead before completing the scoring with an empty-net goal. Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 28 saves, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 16 shots for Toronto.

The Maple Leafs’ recent struggles have increased pressure on their veteran core. Matthews’ message suggests the captain understands that improved performances must begin with the team’s most experienced players.

Matthews also emphasized the importance of preparing for Toronto’s next challenge rather than dwelling on recent results.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we’re ready to play come Monday against a good, young, hungry team,” Matthews said.

“And like I said, I mean, the games are just going to keep coming, so we’ve got to be ready and more assertive in our game.”

Toronto hosts the San Jose Sharks on Monday, with Matthews and the veterans facing an immediate opportunity to respond.
