Dak Prescott became emotional after breaking Tony Romo’s Dallas Cowboys touchdown record during Sunday’s 37-20 win over Washington.
Prescott threw four touchdown passes as Dallas improved to 1-1. His fourth touchdown gave him 249 career passing scores, moving him past Romo’s previous franchise record of 248.
The milestone came on a 24-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb in the fourth quarter. Prescott completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards without throwing an interception.
After the game, Prescott struggled to hold back tears while discussing his late mother, Peggy Prescott. She died in 2013, before Prescott entered the NFL.
“I woke up this morning just a little emotional, way more than normal,” Prescott said. “In the moment of breaking the Cowboys’ TD pass record, I just felt my mom.”
Prescott said his mother always made sure he knew how proud she was. Her voice remained part of the moment, even more than a decade after her death.
“She was never, never, never short of that,” Prescott said. “And I could just hear that. And that’s enough.”

Prescott reached the record in his 141st career game with Dallas. Romo needed 156 games to reach his previous franchise-leading total.
The achievement adds another major mark to Prescott’s Cowboys career. He already ranks first in several franchise passing categories, including completions and attempts.
His performance also helped Dallas recover after its Week 1 loss to the New York Giants. Prescott connected with Lamb and Jake Ferguson for touchdowns during a strong offensive performance.
For the Cowboys, the record carries meaning beyond one quarterback statistic. Prescott has now moved ahead of Romo, Troy Aikman and other notable Dallas quarterbacks in touchdown production.
The timing also matters for Dallas. The Cowboys need Prescott’s efficiency to remain consistent as they move through a difficult schedule.
Prescott credited the people around him after reaching the milestone. “Thankful that my teammates, my coaches and everybody believe in me and all that,” he said.
“But that’s enough,” Prescott added of his mother’s voice. “And I heard it my whole life growing up and I hear it now as loud as I’ve ever heard it. I’m just blessed.”
The Cowboys will now turn toward their next challenge against the Baltimore Ravens. For Prescott, the record provides another defining moment in his decade-long Dallas career.
