‘Be careful what you wish for’: Ex-NHLer Frank Corrado warns Oilers about Mike Babcock

The Edmonton Oilers‘ pursuit of Mike Babcock continues to divide opinion across the hockey world, and former NHL defenseman Frank Corrado has become the latest voice urging caution.

Speaking on Leafs Morning Take, Corrado admitted he was not surprised when reports surfaced linking Babcock to Edmonton’s coaching vacancy. In fact, he previously believed the Oilers should reach out to the veteran coach for hockey advice.

“If I’m the Oilers, I’d call him,” Corrado said. “And the reason why I would call him is just to hear what he has to say about how our team plays.”

Corrado explained that Babcock’s experience and understanding of structure remain valuable.

“What structure do you think they need to have on the ice, or how do you get less turnovers, or whatever the case may be?” Corrado said.

But while Corrado sees value in Babcock’s hockey mind, he stopped short of endorsing the hire itself.

“Be careful what you wish for,” Corrado said.

That warning carries weight given Corrado’s own experience under Babcock during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Corrado questions how Mike Babcock would manage Edmonton’s stars

The Oilers are searching for answers after a disappointing first-round playoff exit ended another season of Stanley Cup expectations. Defensive breakdowns, turnovers and inconsistent team structure were major issues despite Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading one of the league’s most dangerous offenses.

Babcock’s supporters, which is rare, argue he could bring accountability and defensive discipline to a roster that finished with one of the NHL’s weaker defensive records.

Corrado, however, raised concerns about how Babcock’s coaching style could fit a roster built around elite talent.

“Don’t you guys remember there were big games in the playoffs where Patrick Marleau was playing more than Auston Matthews because he wanted to play a certain line more?” Corrado said.

The former defenseman suggested similar decisions could create friction in Edmonton.

“I can’t wait to see that happen in Edmonton,” Corrado said. “You’re going to play, I don’t know, Trent Frederic 17 minutes and play Leon 19 minutes. If that ever happens, I can’t wait to see the reaction.”

Oilers face a high-stakes decision

Edmonton’s situation is unique. The organization is operating under intense pressure with McDavid entering a critical stage of his career and championship expectations growing stronger every season.

Babcock’s strengths are obvious. His teams historically played with structure, demanded accountability and paid close attention to details. Those are areas where the Oilers struggled during their 2025-26 campaign.

The concern is whether those strengths outweigh the baggage attached to his name.

Babcock’s coaching career has been overshadowed in recent years by multiple player complaints and controversies, culminating in his resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets before coaching a game in 2023. The NHL and NHLPA are currently reviewing that situation as Edmonton waits for clarity on a potential hire.

Corrado’s comments highlight the central question facing the Oilers. Nobody doubts Babcock’s hockey knowledge. The challenge is determining whether his methods are the right fit for a roster built around superstars and facing immense pressure to win now.

For Edmonton, this is no longer just a coaching search. It is a decision that could shape the final years of the Connor McDavid era.
