Oilers Rumors: Darren Dreger details what a Darnell Nurse trade could look like

The Edmonton Oilers and Darnell Nurse appear headed toward a split, but moving the veteran defenseman may be far more complicated than simply finding a willing trade partner.

Speaking on TSN, insider Darren Dreger outlined the challenges facing Oilers general manager Stan Bowman as he attempts to navigate one of the most significant potential trades of the offseason.

“All due respect to Darnell, I mean, I think you’d see the cricket emoji, to be fair,” Dreger said when discussing the market for Nurse. “And only because of the contract and what is remaining for Darnell.”

Nurse recently requested a trade after both sides reportedly agreed a fresh start may be necessary. The 31-year-old defenseman has four years remaining on his $74 million contract with a $9.25 million cap hit and holds a full no-movement clause until July 1, 2027.

While interest exists, Dreger believes any deal will require Edmonton to make concessions.

“I did have a couple of general managers who shall go unnamed… said that the interest will come, but only if Stan Bowman and the Edmonton Oilers are willing to take back a bad contract or bad contracts,” Dreger explained.

Darnell Nurse’s contract structure complicates the NHL trade market

The biggest obstacle for the Oilers is financial.

“Otherwise, how do you facilitate a deal of that magnitude with a cap hit of that significance?” Dreger asked.

That question sits at the center of every conversation. Nurse remains a durable player who appeared in all 82 games last NHL season, but his performance no longer aligns with a top-pairing salary. He finished with seven goals and 24 points while posting a minus-12 rating. His average ice time also dropped below 21 minutes per game, a notable decline from previous seasons.

For rival clubs, the player still has value. The contract is the issue.

What this means for the Edmonton Oilers?

Dreger also revealed that the process was initiated by Nurse himself.

“It was Darnell Nurse who initiated this,” Dreger said. “About a week ago, they basically submitted their request with a list of teams.”

However, uncertainty remains regarding how many teams are on that approved list.

“What we don’t know is how many teams are on that list, and maybe they get to a place where if Darnell really wants that change, he’s going to have to expand that list,” Dreger added.

From a roster-building perspective, Edmonton’s motivation is clear. After a disappointing first-round exit and a season marked by defensive struggles, the Oilers need greater flexibility around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Moving Nurse’s contract could help accomplish that goal.

The challenge for Bowman is balancing cap relief with competitiveness. Taking back undesirable contracts may be necessary, but Edmonton cannot afford to weaken an already flawed roster. If a deal happens, it will likely be a complex hockey trade rather than a straightforward salary dump.
