‘I was embarrassed’ — Troy Aikman rips Cowboys receiver over worst performance he’s seen

Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman has delivered a harsh assessment of the team’s receiving corps, singling out one unnamed player for a performance that left him embarrassed. The former quarterback believes the receivers’ route-running problems are making life harder for Dak Prescott.

During an appearance with Cowboys reporter Mike Fisher, Aikman was asked whether the receivers were running routes as crisply as he wanted. His response made his frustration clear.

“No, and they haven’t in a while,” Aikman said. “I won’t name names, but there’s one particular player, I was embarrassed. It’s the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a receiver on a football field.”

Aikman did not identify the player, leaving Cowboys fans to speculate about whom he meant. However, his latest comments follow earlier criticism of the receiving group’s effort and route execution.

The NFL Hall of Fame quarterback previously questioned CeeDee Lamb’s route-running and said some receivers appeared lazy coming off the line of scrimmage.

“I think the routes are terrible,” Aikman said during an earlier radio appearance. He added that inconsistent routes make it difficult for a quarterback to trust where his targets will be.

He specifically pointed out that, “CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running,” before adding that, “As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see.

“I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run, usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play, but if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”

Cowboys need more from their receiving corps

Dallas has struggled to find consistency during the 2026 season. The Cowboys entered their bye week with a 2–4 record, putting pressure on head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his offensive staff.

Prescott remains central to the team’s hopes of turning things around. However, even an experienced quarterback can struggle when receivers fail to create separation or run routes as expected.

Aikman also pointed to Baltimore, San Francisco and Green Bay as examples of teams whose receivers execute their routes more effectively. His comparison highlights the standard he believes Dallas should meet.

“It’s hard to play the (quarterback) position if you’re not certain how guys are going to run routes or where they’re going to be,” Aikman said. “And I’m not speaking for Dak (Prescott)… But as a former quarterback watching it, it’s gotta get a lot better.”

The Cowboys have several problems to address, but improved execution from their receivers could help stabilize the offense. Better route discipline would give Prescott clearer passing windows and help the unit become more dependable.

Aikman’s latest criticism adds to the scrutiny surrounding Dallas. The team now needs answers during its break before returning to action and attempting to revive its season.
