Ex-Oilers Ryan Whitney makes bold ‘Stanley Cup’ prediction after Edmonton’s strong start

Former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney believes the team is heading toward a Stanley Cup championship after its impressive start to the 2026-27 NHL season.

Speaking on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Whitney praised Edmonton’s performances and predicted the franchise would lift the Cup on home ice next spring.

“I’m telling you right now, this is the beginning of a run and a DVD that I will play on repeat for the rest of time in my room,” Whitney said.

The former defenseman also highlighted Ryan Shea’s early impact, calling the signing an excellent move. Whitney joked about his friendship with Shea before praising his performances.

“Is he my good friend? Yes, he is. Is he awesome? Did he lead the team in ice time against Anaheim? Yes, he did.”

Whitney also acknowledged some defensive concerns, noting that Connor Murphy and Jake Walman had not started particularly well. However, he remained encouraged by Mattias Ekholm’s performances.

“Ekholm looks phenomenal,” Whitney added.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl fuel Championship confidence in Oilers

Whitney’s optimism comes as Edmonton has collected points in each of its first five games. The Oilers entered the season with a 4-0-1 record, establishing themselves among the early contenders in the Pacific Division.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl remain central to Edmonton’s championship hopes. Their offensive production gives the Oilers the firepower to challenge any opponent, particularly when the supporting cast contributes consistently.

“I just think that this team is so fun to watch, so fun to root for,” Whitney said. “To see two of the greatest players I’ve ever witnessed start a season like this.”

Defenseman Evan Bouchard has also enjoyed an outstanding start, recording 12 points through five games. His offensive output provides another weapon for a team already built around elite forwards.

However, a strong October does not guarantee playoff success. Edmonton’s defensive consistency and goaltending will likely determine whether it can sustain this momentum through the postseason.

Whitney understands the challenge but sees enough talent to believe the Oilers can finish the job.

“We’re looking at record-breaking numbers,” he said. “We’re looking at an incredible spring at Edmonton.”

He then delivered his boldest prediction: “And we’re looking at a Stanley Cup at the end of the season, raised in their barn. It’s going to be a home win.”

For Oilers fans, Whitney’s prediction raises expectations. Edmonton must turn its early promise into sustained defensive reliability before championship celebrations become realistic.
