“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the National Team,” Messi wrote. “It was a decision that hurt—and still hurts deep down—but I understand that the time has come.”
Messi said he made the decision shortly after Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. He wrote the message on July 21, two days after the final, but recent events involving his family strengthened his decision.
“Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before,” Messi wrote. His father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, died at 68 on August 8 after a prolonged illness.
The announcement closes a defining chapter for Argentina. Messi finishes as the national team’s leading scorer and most-capped player, after helping the country achieve major success during the latter stage of his career.
“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give,” Messi wrote. He also pointed toward Argentina’s next generation, saying “there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.”
