Patrick Kane could reunite with Connor Bedard’s Blackhawks after Chris Chelios update

Patrick Kane’s next NHL stop could bring one of hockey’s most celebrated reunions. The unrestricted free agent is reportedly deciding between the Chicago Blackhawks and his hometown Buffalo Sabres after leaving the Detroit Red Wings, according to Blackhawks advisor Chris Chelios.

Speaking on 104.3 The Score, Chelios revealed he recently spoke with Kane about the decision.

“I am not going to lie to you guys. It is down to Buffalo and Chicago,” Chelios said. “I know that obviously because I spoke to him, but it’s a tough decision for him.”

Kane spent 16 seasons in Chicago, winning three Stanley Cups and establishing himself as one of the greatest players in franchise history. Returning now would place him alongside Connor Bedard, although the young star is expected to miss the opening weeks of the 2026-27 season following shoulder surgery.

Blackhawks offer familiarity and an immediate role

Chelios believes Chicago presents more than a sentimental opportunity. He sees Kane filling an important role while Bedard recovers and helping guide a rebuilding roster.

“You see how tough it is to make the playoffs. It’s hit or miss,” Chelios said. “There’s no guarantees with the absence of Connor in the beginning of the season.”

He added, “How great would that be? He’s so beloved in Chicago. I’m hoping he comes to the Blackhawks. It’d be exciting. It’d be a big boost to the Blackhawks.”

From a roster standpoint, the fit is logical. Chicago has added veterans and defensive depth this offseason but still lacks proven top-six scoring behind Bedard. Kane’s vision and playmaking would immediately strengthen a forward group expected to rely heavily on Frank Nazar early in the season.

Buffalo presents a different opportunity

Chelios acknowledged why the Sabres remain a serious option.

“It’s a tough decision for him,” Chelios said. “Whether to go home, make it easy on his parents and his family and his friends.”

That personal connection could outweigh nostalgia. Buffalo also offers Kane a chance to finish his career close to home after spending last season producing 57 points in 67 games with Detroit.

Still, Chicago appears to offer the cleaner hockey fit. Kane already understands the market, carries instant credibility inside the organization, and would ease pressure on younger forwards until Bedard returns.

Chelios remains optimistic.

“I think he’s going to make his decision pretty quick now,” he said. “He’s still got some good gas left in him. I think he’s got two or three years left in him. So let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

If Kane chooses Chicago, the Blackhawks would gain more than a familiar face. They would add a proven leader capable of helping bridge the gap between the franchise’s championship past and its next era built around Bedard.
