UEFA Calls Off Argentina Vs Spain Finalissima Over Middle East Situation

UEFA has officially cancelled the highly anticipated Finalissima between Argentina and Spain due to the ongoing political situation in the Middle East. The match was originally scheduled for March 27 in Qatar and would have featured the UEFA Euro 2024 champions against the Copa América 2024 winners.

The game was expected to be one of the most talked-about international fixtures of the year. It would have also marked a potential first meeting between Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal and Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

UEFA confirmed the decision in an official statement after discussions with organizers in Qatar. The governing body said the unstable situation in the region made it impossible to stage the match safely.

“After much discussion between UEFA and the organising authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champions Argentina cannot be played as hoped in Qatar on 27 March,” UEFA said in the statement.

The organization expressed disappointment that the fixture could not take place as planned. UEFA also thanked Qatar’s organizing committee for the work done in preparation for hosting the event.

Several alternative solutions were considered before the final decision. UEFA first proposed hosting the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the same date, with an equal split of supporters from both nations. However, the Argentine Football Association rejected the proposal.

Another idea involved staging the Finalissima over two legs. One match would have taken place in Madrid on March 27, while the second would have been played in Buenos Aires during a future international window. That option was also declined.

UEFA then attempted to secure Argentina’s agreement to play at a neutral European venue on March 27 or March 30, but that proposal also failed to gain approval.

Argentina suggested scheduling the game after the next World Cup, but Spain had no available dates during that period. With no workable solution, UEFA confirmed the cancellation of this edition of the Finalissima.

“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.” UEFA wrote.

Argentina remains the current champions after defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley in the 2022 edition of the competition.
