Paul Pogba said that his “nightmare is over“
Paul Pogba says his “nightmare is over” after his four-year doping ban was reduced to 18 months. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) made this decision. The 31-year-old Juventus player can start training again in January 2025. He will be eligible to play from March.
“Finally the nightmare is over. I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again.” Pogba said, per BBC.com
Pogba was suspended by Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal after a drug test showed high testosterone levels. CAS confirmed the reduced ban starting from September 11, 2023. Pogba expressed relief and thanked CAS for their decision.
“I always stated that I never knowingly breached World Anti-Doping Agency regulations when I took a nutritional supplement prescribed to me by a doctor, which does not affect or enhance the performance of male athletes.” Pogba said.
“I play with integrity and, although I must accept that this is a strict liability offence, I want to place on record my thanks to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s judges who heard my explanation.” Pogba added.
If the four-year ban had stood, he would not have played until 2027, when he would be 34.
“This has been a hugely distressing period in my life because everything I have worked so hard for has been put on hold.” Pogba shared.
Pogba faced many challenges since returning to Juventus, including injuries that limited his playtime. He played only 162 minutes in the 2022-23 season.
Pogba was provisionally suspended after a positive test in August 2023. A second sample in October confirmed the result. His agent said Pogba never intended to break any rules.
