The Edmonton Oilers suffered a tough 7-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, but the game still produced a rare moment involving captain Connor McDavid. Late in the second period, McDavid dropped the gloves with Stars forward Justin Hryckowian after a tense scrum on the ice.
The incident happened after a puck was fired toward Oilers star Leon Draisaitl near the end of the period. McDavid quickly stepped in to defend his teammate and sparked a brief fight with Hryckowian. The Oilers captain ripped off his opponent’s helmet and landed a couple of punches before officials separated the players.
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said McDavid showed clear frustration late in the second period while trying to energize his team.
“Well, obviously, he’s very frustrated and trying to fire up our team, and you know, they didn’t like the shot at Leon where they’re trying to clear the puck,” Knoblauch. “And they just, you know, just roughed it up a little bit. But yeah, obviously there’s a lot of fire from our leaders, and we need [it].”
Seeing McDavid involved in a fight surprised many. He rarely drops the gloves during games, but the Oilers captain showed clear frustration as Edmonton struggled badly in Dallas. Both McDavid and Draisaitl ended up in the penalty box as the third period began.
Forward Zach Hyman’s reactions to Connor McDavid’s fight
Forward Zach Hyman later spoke about the moment and the message behind it. Hyman admitted McDavid is usually the last player expected to fight but said the captain tried to spark energy for the team.
“He’s the last guy that should be doing that, to be honest,” Hyman said after the game. “…You saw him trying to pull our group back into the fight.”
The Oilers were already trailing heavily when the fight occurred. Goaltender Tristan Jarry allowed seven goals on 27 shots in a difficult outing. Jarry’s season numbers dropped to a 4.17 goals-against average and an .855 save percentage after the loss.

Why did the Oilers lose to the Dallas Stars?
Edmonton’s defensive issues again became clear in the defeat. The team continues to rely heavily on its offense, led by McDavid, who tops the NHL with 110 points in 66 games. Bouchard also leads league defensemen with 76 points.
Even with the inconsistency, the Oilers remain in the playoff race. Edmonton holds a 32-26-8 record and sits third in the Pacific Division standings as the season moves toward its final stretch.
