John Tavares’ relentless approach to hockey impressed former NHL defenseman Cameron Gaunce long before the Toronto Maple Leafs made him a household name. Gaunce recently recalled seeing Tavares dominate elite youth hockey alongside future NHL stars.
Speaking on First Up, Gaunce explained when he first realized Tavares possessed something different. After one game, Tavares scored three or four goals while Steven Stamkos had one or two.
“Stamkos after the game was talking about John,” Gaunce said. “He already isn’t content scoring two goals. He wants the third. He wants the fourth.”

For Gaunce, that mindset separated Tavares from other talented players at the time. “He had the mental edge at 13, 14 years old that most players didn’t have,” he said.
The Maple Leafs recently celebrated the 6-year anniversary of the John Tavares Foundation. They shared a video on X, in which Tavares called wearing the Maple Leafs, “a true honour” with his teammates.
Tavares already had the hands, shot and puck protection skills expected from an elite prospect. However, Gaunce said his mentality around the net stood out even more.
“He’s going to be good, but he’s going to be like unbelievable at the next level,” Gaunce recalled thinking.
John Tavares’ preparation went beyond ice
That drive continued after Tavares reached the NHL. Gaunce said Tavares maintained an intense training routine even after signing with Toronto.
“He would carry around two backpacks with him,” Gaunce said. One contained food, while the other items helped Tavares manage stiffness and recovery.
Gaunce also recalled hearing about Tavares stopping during a drive home when he felt physically uncomfortable. “He pulled over the side of the road and got a stretch in,” Gaunce said.
The story offers insight into why Tavares remained productive throughout a lengthy NHL career. His preparation was not limited to scheduled practices or games.
Tavares recorded 31 goals and 71 points during the 2025-26 season. He also reached 500 career goals, reinforcing his value as Toronto entered a new era. So far in his NHL career, Tavares has 1,185 points, with 525 goals and 660 assists in 1,266 games.

That level of preparation can stabilize a team through roster changes. Toronto has undergone major changes under new management, but Tavares remains an experienced center.
His role has also changed since he served as captain. Auston Matthews now leads the Leafs, while Tavares continues contributing as a veteran presence.
Gaunce’s memories show that Tavares’ success was never based solely on natural talent. His relentless preparation was already visible before he reached the NHL.
