Manchester United ‘s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur showed their lack of experienced players on the bench. Nine of their substitutes were 19 or younger. Injuries have made things worse, leaving manager Rúben Amorim with few options.
Amorim admitted the situation was difficult due to many injuries, but stressed to focus on the upcoming games.
“We have young kids and we have to work with the young kids. We were not expecting so many injuries in one week. These things happen. Let’s focus on the next game,” Amorim said (via reuters.com)
Tottenham had key players returning, but United had no reinforcements. The absence of Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte left gaps in the squad.
Defender Matthijs de Ligt said the team should perform better despite injuries.
“We still had a starting eleven with first-team players. It’s no excuse,” de Ligt said. “It’s not nice when you lose five players in one week, but that’s part of football, part of life… I believe you have to deserve fortune. At the moment, apparently we don’t deserve it. I don’t believe in fortune coming out of nowhere.”
United’s struggles raise concerns about their squad planning. With 13 league games left, they must find solutions quickly.
A worst start after decades for Manchester United
This was United’s 12th defeat in 25 Premier League games, marking their worst start since the 1973-74 season. Amorim has lost eight of his 14 league matches in charge, leaving United in 15th place. While they are not in immediate danger of relegation, their poor form has deepened concerns at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and Lisandro Martinez’ injury
Prior to the game, Manchester United’s Amad Diallo was set to miss weeks due to ankle ligament damage. The 22-year-old confirmed the injury on Instagram.
“Extremely disappointed to be writing this message in such a crucial time of the season. Unfortunately, I will be out for some time with an injury.” Diallo wrote.
He expressed disappointment but promised to return stronger. Diallo has been in good form, scoring six goals in his last 14 games.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, 19, was also injured and missed the Tottenham match. Defender Lisandro Martinez had successful knee surgery. He shared an emotional message about recovery.
“The surgery went perfectly!! Now it’s time to give it my all, with heart and soul, in the rehabilitation process.” Martinez said.
