Lamine Yamal leads Barcelona to season-opening win over Mallorca

FC Barcelona kicked off their 2025/26 La Liga campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win at Mallorca, but it was Lamine Yamal who stole the spotlight. The teenage sensation assisted the opener for Raphinha and sealed the victory with a stunning curled finish in stoppage time, announcing himself as one of the stars of the season before it had even properly begun.

Hansi Flick’s side dominated from the start, combining possession football with sharp attacking movements. New signing Joan Garcia made a confident competitive debut in goal, while Yamal, Pedri, De Jong, and Raphinha led the offensive charge. Yamal’s assist for Raphinha came early, perfectly weighted and executed, showing the teenager’s vision and maturity beyond his years. Sharing images of the game on social media, Yamal captioned them:

“The party for the 10.”

The match swung further in Barcelona’s favor after Mallorca were reduced to nine men. Manu Morlanes received a second yellow card following a challenge on Yamal, and Vedat Muriqi saw red for dangerous play on Garcia. Despite this, Hansi Flick admitted that Barcelona didn’t fully capitalize on their advantage (via Barca Universal):

“It’s positive to start with three points, but I can’t say I’m completely satisfied… Playing at 50 or 60 percent against nine players isn’t possible. We have to play faster. We have to improve some situations.”

Hansi Flick praised Lamine Yamal

Even so, Barcelona extended their lead through Ferran Torres in the first half and capped the win with Lamine Yamal’s spectacular goal. Flick heaped praise on the teenager (via Barca Blaugranes):

“As I’ve said before, he always wants to play well and help the team. Lamine is a special player and everyone can see it. From what I see in training, he is very motivated. In matches, he also fights and defends. I’m very happy for him.”

The game also saw debuts for Marcus Rashford and Jofre Torrents, though space was limited. Flick noted:

“It wasn’t good for him [Rashford] because there was no space…” Then Flick talked about Torrents and said, “It wasn’t a good part for him because there was no space.”

While the scoreline may suggest a routine victory, Flick wants more from his side. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s mix of youth and experience, led by a dazzling Yamal, provided plenty of reasons for optimism as they begin the defense of their league title.

Barcelona shared a post on Instagram praising Yamal’s goal and wrote:

“Lamine Yamal is HIM. 👑”

Final Score: Mallorca 0-3 FC Barcelona
Goals: Raphinha (assist Yamal), Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal
