Merino hat-trick leads Spain to 6-0 win over Turkey in World Cup qualifier
Spain cruised to a 6-0 victory over Turkey in Konya on Sunday, taking control of their 2026 World Cup qualifying group. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino scored a hat-trick, his first ever for Spain. Barcelona’s Pedri González netted twice, and Ferran Torres added another as Spain topped Group E with two wins from two games.
Pedri explained how Spain set the tone early.
“We knew we had to come out strongly from the start and that’s what we did, dominating,” he said, via The Score. “I think the team was able to keep that intensity through to the end of the game and the result reflects that.”
Pedri opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a sharp finish from the edge of the box. Merino struck his first after a flowing team move, then added a second just before halftime from Mikel Oyarzabal’s assist. Oyarzabal finished with three assists on the night.
In the second half, Lamine Yamal played in Torres for Spain’s fourth. Minutes later, Yamal set up Merino for his third, a curling shot from distance. Merino was delighted after the match.
“I’m very happy for winning, to pick up six points, for doing it in this way, and for scoring three goals, which is not normal — the first hat-trick of my career,” he said.
Yamal had chances to score himself but missed narrowly. Tempers flared late as Arda Güler shoved Yamal, though Spain’s control was never threatened. Coach Luis de la Fuente gave Jorge de Frutos his debut in the final minutes.
With six points, Spain lead Group E ahead of Georgia and Turkey, who both have three. Bulgaria sit bottom with zero. Spain’s dominant win signals their strong intent ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
