Gavin McKenna enters the 2026 NHL Draft as the consensus favorite to hear his name called first overall. The Penn State winger spoke confidently about the trait that defines him beyond his elite offensive talent. His comments offered another glimpse into why NHL teams view him as a franchise cornerstone.
Speaking to reporters one day before the draft, McKenna pointed to his mindset rather than his statistics.
McKenna said, “I’d say my work ethic. I think I like to drag my teammates into the fire”

McKenna explained that constant improvement has shaped his development.
“Whether it’s on or off the ice, I really like to push myself hard, and it’s something that I’ve learned throughout the years that has helped me,” McKenna mentioned. “I think the off-ice stuff especially. So it’s something I like to do myself, and whether I get to pull my teammates into it, I like to push them as well.”
Gavin McKenna’s leadership traits match his elite talent
Those comments reinforce why McKenna sits atop nearly every draft board. He scored 51 points in 35 NCAA games at Penn State and became a Hobey Baker finalist. Scouts believe his skill, pace and competitiveness make him NHL-ready immediately.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to select McKenna with the first overall pick. Toronto won the draft lottery despite entering with only an 8.5 percent chance after a disappointing 32-36-14 season. General manager John Chayka has indicated the organization expects to keep the selection rather than trade it.
McKenna also admitted the possibility of joining Toronto still feels surreal.
“Yeah, it’s kinda hard to… It doesn’t really feel real. But yeah, it’s pretty cool,” McKenna said.
McKenna welcomed the chance to play for one of hockey’s biggest markets.
“Obviously, Toronto has such a big fan base and passionate fan base,” McKenna said. “So if I do get drafted there, I’d be pumped. Yeah, it was pretty cool to see that.”

Why Gavin McKenna’s mindset matters?
The NHL Draft begins Friday night at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, with rounds two through seven scheduled for Saturday. McKenna’s name is expected to headline the event.
From an NHL perspective, work ethic often separates elite prospects from future franchise players. McKenna’s willingness to demand more from himself and his teammates fits the profile of a player capable of driving winning culture. That quality could prove just as valuable as his scoring ability.
If Toronto follows expectations, McKenna would join a roster already featuring Auston Matthews. His arrival would also support the organization’s broader rebuild under Chayka and head coach Jim Hiller.

Elite talent creates excitement, but consistent habits usually determine long-term success, and McKenna appears determined to bring both from his first NHL training camp.
