Football journalist Fabrizio Romano is facing backlash online after a Facebook post wishing Lamine Yamal’s father a happy birthday. The post read, “Lamine’s father turns 39. Happy birthday!” A fan on X (formerly Twitter) shared a screenshot of the post and wrote,
“Fabrizio Romano acts like he’s a family member of Lamine Yamal because what are these posts???”
The post quickly gained attention, and other fans joined the conversation and questioned Romano’s intentions.
“There’s no way this is his official account right? You’re having a laugh.” One user questioned but it was Romano’s real accound.
“He doesn’t post the same on Insta and X.” ,Another fan wrote pointing to the fact that Romano didn’t share the same post on his Instagram and X account.
“He is in Yamal’s payroll bro.” A third added, referring to Romano pushing Yamal in the spotlight with content which other football fans might not find helpful.
Some fans found the post strange and overly personal, especially for a journalist known for transfer news. Others questioned why he would post something so specific about a player’s family member.
“If anyone can beat Messi in PR, it’s Yamal; that is for sure.” a fan wrote, and compared Yamal’s public hype to Lionel Messi.
“While fanbase shook by Fabrizio man just posting what he wants to post😭😭” a fan defended Romano for posting about LamineYamal.
Lamine Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, is originally from Larache, Morocco. He moved to Spain when he was nine and worked as a building painter. He also played football casually.
As of now, Fabrizio Romano has not responded to the criticism, and he will most likely not notice it. But the fans have continued this debate and it will be interesting to see if he responds to it in future.
