Brady Tkachuk trade sparks ‘USA Group Chat’ tampering claim

The NHL offseason delivered its biggest shock on June 21 when the Ottawa Senators traded captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. The deal sent one of the league’s most recognizable power forwards to the reigning Eastern Conference powerhouse and immediately sparked debate across the hockey world.

NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun reported on X before the trade was finalized, writing, “Hearing that the Florida Panthers are getting close to acquiring Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators. I believe Ottawa will get three first-round picks and a second-round pick in the deal if finalized. More to come.”

After the report surfaced, Shaun Starr replied, “NHL needs to investigate that USA group chat. All kinds of tampering going on there I’m sure of it.”

While Starr’s comment reflected fan speculation, the timing fueled discussion because Tkachuk joins a Panthers roster led by his brother Matthew Tkachuk. The pair recently played together for Team USA during the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Olympics, where they helped lead the Americans to a gold medal.

Ottawa received a significant return. The package includes the ninth and 25th overall selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, a top-10 protected first-round pick in 2029, and a 2027 second-round selection.

Why Ottawa decided to move its captain Brady Tkachuk?

The trade emerged after growing belief around the league that Tkachuk was unlikely to sign an extension before reaching unrestricted free agency in 2028. Ottawa faced a difficult decision between keeping its captain or maximizing his value while it still controlled his rights.

Reports suggest internal factors also played a role.

NHL analyst Renaud Lavoie posted on X, “For the Senators to trade Brady Tkachuk, it means they were under pressure to do so. I’m told this pressure was also coming from the team’s locker room. This strongly explains why they agreed to trade him to a team in his own division. Brady Tkachuk will have been a controversial captain in Ottawa, and the big losers of this day are them New York Rangers who were dreaming of getting their hands on him.”

Lavoie later added, “Brady Tkachuk trade is a total bomb but I’m told pressure was high on the
@Senators to make it happen. Told by multiple sources the dressing room was not pushing for Brady to stay. That being said it’s still a gamble to trade him in the same division.”

Those reports followed another disappointing playoff exit. Ottawa lost in six games to Toronto in 2025 before being swept by Carolina in 2026. Tkachuk finished the Hurricanes series without a point.

What the trade means for Florida Panthers?

Florida Panthers become even harder to play against.

Brady Tkachuk recorded 59 points in 60 games last season while delivering 162 hits. His physical style mirrors the identity Florida has built under its recent championship runs. Placing Brady alongside Matthew gives the Panthers two elite forechecking forwards capable of controlling momentum and wearing down opponents.

The Panthers also gain a player with two seasons remaining on a team-friendly contract carrying an $8.2 million cap hit. That gives Florida time to evaluate a long-term extension before he becomes eligible in July 2027.

For Ottawa, the return offers flexibility and future assets. Yet the pressure now shifts to management. Trading a captain in his prime is a franchise-defining move.

Florida, meanwhile, is clearly chasing another Stanley Cup. If the Tkachuk brothers develop the same chemistry they showed with Team USA, the rest of the Eastern Conference could face an even bigger challenge in the years ahead.
