On today’s Good Morning Football, the hosts discussed Jalen Ramsey’s new contract with the Miami Dolphins. Ramsey has agreed to a three-year extension worth $72.3 million. This makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, earning $24.1 million per year.
Peter Schrager highlighted Ramsey’s strong performance with the Jaguars, Rams, and Dolphins. He noted the importance of keeping Ramsey, especially with injuries to other key players. Schrager also mentioned that Jevon Holland is a promising player, but Ramsey remains essential to the team.
“This is a team that lost two key defensive players to injury last year when we lost both (Bradley) Chubb and (Jaelan) Phillips on the outside, and the defense kind of fell apart.” Schrager said, “… So congratulations to him and his agent, David Mulugheta.”
Akbar Gbajabiamila pointed out that Ramsey’s new deal sets a high standard for cornerback salaries. He compared it to the big salaries of wide receivers and suggested that quarterbacks should also see higher pay. Gbajabiamila congratulated Ramsey and his agent for securing the deal.
‘He just set the market as the highest paid for a defensive back, especially a cornerback…” Gbajabiamila said, “If the wide receivers will make that type of money, quarterbacks should be making some big money, too. So congrats to him.”
Kyle Brandt questioned if Ramsey is still the best cornerback in the league. He noted other top corners like Patrick Surtain II and Sauce Gardner.
“I just wonder, does Jalen Ramsey still have the belt? Is he the best corner in the league?” Brandt questioned, “We talk about this a lot because he definitely had it on at one point. He might still, but you got guys like Patrick Surtain II in Denver, and Sauce (Sauce Gardner) in New York is coming. There are some great corners. I think two, or three years ago, Jalen Ramsey was the one. “
“Maybe even a year ago, I’d like to see him proclaim himself the guy. I am still the number one corner in the league in a chain of ascension that goes all the way back to Rod Woodson and Deion Sanders and Champ Bailey. There’s always one who’s like, I am the league’s best corner, and he has been that. Is he still? He’s paid like it. We’ll see.” Brandt added.
Brandt acknowledged Ramsey’s past success but wondered if he still holds the top spot.
Dolphins plan to use Jalen Ramsey at different positions, consider him a “chess Piece”
Jalen Ramsey’s previous big contract was with the Los Angeles Rams. He originally signed a three-year, $55 million deal with the Dolphins when he joined them through a trade in the offseason. Ramsey played a key role in the Rams’ Super Bowl win in 2021 and was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016.
Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver praised Ramsey’s skills. He plans to use Ramsey in various roles to maximize his impact on the field.
“You talk about prototype corners, he is that,” Weaver told reporters via usatoday.com, “Size, length, speed, competitiveness. The thing about him is I think he is your ultimate chess piece. So to have him just sit outside and be a field corner or boundary corner or something like that is a detriment to him. We got to find ways to move him around where he can be most impactful. We’re committed to doing that.”
In his career, Ramsey has played 118 regular-season games. He has 474 tackles, 22 interceptions, 97 pass deflections, and six forced fumbles. Ramsey is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time first-team All-Pro.
