Connor McDavid Impressed by Tampa Bay’s Structure and Coaching

Connor McDavid did not hold back in his assessment of the Tampa Bay Lightning after their 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers. While the result hurt, McDavid pointed to Tampa Bay’s structure and coaching as key differences.

Speaking to the media, he praised the Lightning for their discipline across the ice, highlighting how every player understands their role. McDavid described the team as extremely organized and well-rehearsed, noting that their system makes them difficult to break down.

Connor McDavid on Nikita Kucherov

A major factor in the game was Nikita Kucherov, who recorded four points to take the league scoring lead with 118 points. His recent run of 99 points in 46 games has been dominant, and McDavid acknowledged the level he is playing at.

“Yeah, he’s playing great,” McDavid said. “Obviously, playing on a great team with a lot of great players over there. They got a great system. They’re perfectly coached. They all know what they’re doing all over the ice. It’s impressive. They’re a great team.”

McDavid on Oilers’ defense and Lightning Frustrating them

Despite the loss, McDavid did not see frustration in Edmonton’s performance. He felt the Oilers handled defensive-zone pressure reasonably well against a strong opponent. However, Tampa Bay’s defensive structure limited their ability to create consistent scoring chances.

“No, I don’t think so,” McDavid said about whether the Lightning frustrated them. “I thought, you know, playing against a team like Tampa, you’re going to spend some time in the D-zone and we did that. I thought we were comfortable in the D-zone and trying to score on counters and stuff like that against.”

McDavid praised the Lightning’s coaching and Structure

The Lightning scored five goals on 30 shots, while limiting Edmonton to just two goals. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves, shutting down key chances when the Oilers pushed. Tampa Bay also executed in special moments, including a short-handed goal that shifted momentum.

“They’re good,” McDavid said. “Obviously, they’re very good. As I said, they’re extremely well coached. They’re extremely well organized. They’re very, very rehearsed in everything that they do. It’s very impressive. Very, very impressive. And when you do break them down, they got a heck of a goalie to backstop them.”

For the Oilers, the defeat highlights ongoing concerns. The team continues to produce offensively but struggles with defensive consistency. Those issues have become more visible against structured teams like Tampa Bay.

Connor McDavid is approaching 400 goals and 1200 points

Despite the loss, McDavid recorded his 38th goal and remains close to key milestones, including 400 career goals and 1,200 points. Still, the bigger picture remains team performance. McDavid now has 399 career goals and 1198 career points.

This season, McDavid has registered 116 points, and this is his 9th 100-point season. He is focused on helping the Oilers qualify for the playoffs after defeats in back-to-back Stanley Cup finals in 2024 and 2025.

Meanwhile, as the playoffs approach, Edmonton faces a clear challenge. To compete with top contenders, they must improve structure and consistency. Tampa Bay offered a clear example of what that level looks like.
