Sidney Crosby offered a calm and measured response as debate grew around the 2026 Winter Olympics golden goal puck.
Crosby, known for defining moments on hockey’s biggest stage, refused to engage in the controversy surrounding Jack Hughes and his request for the historic puck.
“I didn’t even think about it that way, to be honest with you,” Crosby told The Athletic on Wednesday. “I was just happy that I scored the goal. I was happy that the puck was going to the Hall of Fame. I didn’t even think about it that way.”
Crosby’s response reflected the same humility that marked his iconic 2010 Olympic moment.
Crosby’s “Golden Goal” in Vancouver remains one of hockey’s most famous plays. He scored in overtime against the United States, sealing a 3–2 win for Canada. The puck and stick from that goal now sit in the Hockey Hall of Fame, preserved as part of the sport’s history. Crosby never questioned that decision, focusing instead on the achievement itself.
What Jack Hughes say about the puck?
The contrast with Hughes’ situation has drawn attention. Hughes scored the overtime winner for Team USA at the 2026 Olympics, ending a long wait for gold. However, the puck was quickly collected and sent to the Hall of Fame through official channels. Hughes later voiced frustration, saying he wanted the puck, even hoping to gift it to his father.
“I don’t see why Megan Keller or I shouldn’t have those pucks,” Hughes said about Team USA’s golden goals in the men’s and women’s categories.

Why the Hall of Fame kept the puck?
Hall of Fame curator Philip Pritchard responded firmly, stating the puck was never Hughes’ to claim. The International Ice Hockey Federation had already designated it for preservation. The artifact now forms part of a broader Olympic display celebrating key moments from the Games.
Crosby, now in his 21st NHL season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, continues to perform at an elite level at age 38. With three Stanley Cups and two Olympic gold medals, his legacy is secure.
Now, Crosby’s humble comments show us his simple view: the moment matters more than the possession.
