The Edmonton Oilers showed urgency when it mattered most, rallying for a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks with a strong third period display. Head coach Kris Knoblauch pointed to a clear shift in approach late in the game as the difference.
Edmonton entered the third period tied 3-3 after letting a 3-1 lead slip in the second. Instead of sitting back, the Oilers pushed forward with a simpler and more direct style. That change helped them regain control and close out the win.
“Well, I liked how we came out and played most of the third period,” Knoblauch said. “We could have been sitting on our heels… but I thought we just simplified our game a lot more.”

Knoblauch felt the team overplayed at times earlier in the game, especially in the offensive zone. “We were so reluctant to shoot, and we were just looking for that perfect play,” he said. “When you play like that, you end up having to make five or 10 good plays before you get another one.”
That approach changed in the third. The Oilers played more direct hockey, putting pucks on net and forcing the Sharks to defend under pressure. “I thought we just played a lot more simpler and a lot more direct in the third period,” Knoblauch added.
Max Jones scored the game-winner, while Zach Hyman added an insurance goal. Adam Henrique had two assists, and contributions came across the lineup. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor Murphy and Vasily Podkolzin also scored.
Knoblauch highlighted the impact of the fourth line, which played a key role in the win. “That line, it was huge for us,” he said. “We talked before where we need guys stepping up.”
Jones, in particular, earned praise for his energy and physical play. “I think Jones adds a little physicality, speed definitely,” Knoblauch said.
Kris Koblauch on Leon Draisaitl’s Injury
With Leon Draisaitl out for the rest of the regular season, the Oilers know they must rely on collective effort. “No one’s going to replace Leon. That’s never going to happen, but everyone collectively needs to be a little bit better,” Knoblauch said.
He credited the fourth line for setting the tone. “All three of them were the difference tonight.”
The win pushes Edmonton further into the NHL‘s Pacific Division race and extends their strong run at home against San Jose. More importantly, it showed a team adjusting its style and finding urgency at the right time.
