Cristiano Ronaldo has received strong backing from Portugal’s football leadership despite his provisional suspension following a disciplinary investigation. Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença expects the veteran forward to return during November’s international break.
Fabrizio Romano shared Proença’s comments on X, highlighting the federation’s desire to welcome Ronaldo back.
“The Federation, the coach, all the teammates are aligned: we want Cristiano back,” Proença said. “I expect him back already during the November international break.”
He also expressed confidence in Ronaldo’s willingness to return, adding, “Cristiano is also willing to return. He’s the best of all time.”
The comments offer a positive signal for Portugal as the federation investigates Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp. However, his expected return does not mean the disciplinary case has been resolved.
The federation confirmed that proceedings began following an October 7 incident. It also imposed a non-automatic provisional suspension while the investigation continues.
Ronaldo’s Return Depends on More Than His Status
The dispute reportedly followed Ronaldo’s omission from Portugal’s match against Norway. The 41-year-old believed coach Jorge Jesus had broken an understanding about his playing time.
Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp before Portugal’s next match. He later apologized publicly and asked the federation to determine an appropriate punishment.
That apology may help repair relationships, but the investigation must still establish the disciplinary consequences. Proença’s comments suggest Portugal wants to avoid turning the dispute into a prolonged separation.
From a tactical perspective, Ronaldo’s return would give Portugal an experienced attacking option. However, Jesus must still balance his captain’s influence with team structure, selection decisions, and the development of other forwards.
Portugal cannot allow uncertainty surrounding one player to overshadow its collective objectives. Ronaldo remains a major figure, but his availability must fit the coach’s plans.
The provisional suspension remains an important qualification to Proença’s optimism. A November return is an expectation, not a confirmed selection.
Portugal’s leadership has made its position clear: Ronaldo remains wanted. The final disciplinary decision will determine how quickly the captain can rejoin the squad.
