The New York Giants received devastating news Tuesday after further testing showed Jaxson Dart’s knee injury is worse than initially expected.
ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Dart and the Giants are facing the possibility of season-ending knee surgery. The second-year quarterback suffered the injury during Monday’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Initial reports indicated Dart had suffered an MCL sprain. However, additional testing Tuesday revealed a more serious issue, leaving his 2026 season in doubt.
“Breaking: Further testing today revealed Giants QB Jaxson Dart’s knee injury is worse than initially thought,” Schefter posted.
“Of all the QB injuries suffered in Week 2, Dart’s is turning out to easily be the most significant.”
Dart was injured on New York’s opening drive after being hit by Rams defenders Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart. He completed three of five passes for 20 yards before leaving.
The injury quickly changed the Giants’ outlook after Dart helped them beat Dallas in Week 1. Jameis Winston will now take over as New York’s starting quarterback in Week 3.

Schefter also highlighted a troubling Giants trend surrounding their quarterback position.
“The Giants have not had a QB start every game in a season since Eli Manning in 2018,” Schefter wrote. “That streak will continue with Jaxson Dart set to miss time, potentially the season.”
In another follow up post, Schefter called it a “Gut Punch” and wrote, “The Giants were riding high after Week 1, when Jaxson Dart went 23-of-29 for 230 yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs in a win over the Cowboys. Now, after Week 2, he might be done for the season..”
NFL media members immediately reacted to the update. ESPN’s Field Yates summed up the news with one word: “Brutal!!!”
NBC’s John Clark also expressed sympathy for the Giants.
“Tough news for the Giants,” Clark wrote. “You hate to see these quarterback injuries.”
Founder of Empire Sports Media, Alex Wilson wrote, “No, no, no… I can’t do this anymore. I can’t watch this team anymore. I will, but I hate it here.”
Bears’ analyst, Dave, wrote, “Bears fans, it could always be worse.”
From a team perspective, the loss of Dart creates a major structural problem. Winston struggled after replacing him, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and one interception.
New York also lost offensive rhythm without its young quarterback. The Giants managed only 182 total yards against Los Angeles, compared with 481 for the Rams.

The Giants must now prepare around Winston while awaiting a final decision on Dart’s surgery. If Dart misses the season, New York faces a major setback at its most important position.
