Former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Roddy White has sharply criticized the Dallas Cowboys after they chose Sam Howell over Joe Milton III.
Dallas named Howell Dak Prescott’s primary backup for the 2026 season after waiving Milton. The move drew attention because Milton delivered strong numbers during the preseason.
White made his frustration clear on X. “How the hell Joe Milton get cut? He literally dominated the whole preseason,” he wrote.
The former Atlanta Falcons star then took direct aim at Howell. “Sam Howell is trash like dumpster trash,” White added.
Milton completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns this preseason. He also avoided interceptions while showing improved accuracy and command.

Howell completed 27 of 40 attempts for 314 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He also added a rushing touchdown and owns 18 career NFL starts.
That experience appears to have influenced Dallas’ decision. Howell has already handled regular-season pressure, while Milton has never started an NFL game.
The Cowboys also had financial reasons for keeping Howell. His contract included $2.5 million guaranteed, making his release more costly for Dallas.
Cowboys prioritized Sam Howell’s experience
From a roster perspective, the decision reflects risk management rather than simply preseason performance. Howell gives Dallas a quarterback with meaningful starting experience behind Prescott.
Still, Milton’s numbers make White’s criticism understandable. His 378 passing yards led the two quarterbacks, while he also protected the football throughout the preseason.
The Cowboys reportedly hope Milton clears waivers and returns to their practice squad. That would allow Dallas to retain his developmental upside without making him the immediate backup.
For head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys, the larger question involves emergency readiness. If Prescott misses time, Howell must provide stability immediately.

Howell has shown flashes during his career, but his previous starting opportunity also exposed inconsistency. Dallas will need stronger quarterback play if Prescott cannot suit up.
Milton, meanwhile, now faces an uncertain next step. His preseason performance could attract another team if he reaches the waiver wire.
White’s comments add noise to an already debated decision. Ultimately, Dallas is betting that Howell’s experience matters more than Milton’s preseason momentum.
