Oilers’ Connor McDavid backs Leon Draisaitl’s playoff form in NHL

The Edmonton Oilers head into the NHL playoffs with renewed optimism as captain Connor McDavid backed teammate Leon Draisaitl to deliver again on the big stage.

Speaking Sunday, McDavid highlighted the impact of getting key players back ahead of Game 1 against the Anaheim Ducks. He said the return of Draisaitl and forward Jason Dickinson gives the group a boost.

“Really positive,” McDavid said. “Obviously, missing those two guys hurts. Obviously, with Leo and Dicki, two of our top nine guys. So, miss those guys a lot, and good to see them back out there looking good.”

Both players missed time late in the regular season, leaving gaps in the lineup. The Oilers now look more complete entering a critical playoff series.

Draisaitl’s return stands out as a major factor. The German forward missed the final 14 games due to a lower-body injury. He still produced 97 points in 65 appearances, showing his importance. His likely role on the second line and power play gives Edmonton added scoring depth.

McDavid also stressed Draisaitl’s ability to elevate his game in the postseason.

“Yeah, he has an ability to raise his game to a whole another level,” McDavid said. “You see that time and time again in the playoffs. It’s a guy who battles through anything. Really, really impressive.”

Draisaitl’s resilience has made him one of the most dangerous playoff performers.

Connor McDavid talked about importance of healthy Oilers’ roster in NHL playoffs

The Oilers enter the playoffs after a strong offensive season, with a 41-30-11 record. McDavid led the league with 138 points, driving the team’s attack. Edmonton averaged over three goals per game, supported by an effective power play. However, defensive inconsistency remains a concern.

So, the Oilers’ health could shape how far the team goes this year.

“Well, it’s important,” McDavid said. “Obviously, health is a big thing. Health throughout the playoffs is important, and a team that can stay the healthiest usually has a good chance. So you want to be healthy day one, and we’re getting closer and closer to that.”

For McDavid, the focus remains on execution. He believes the group has the tools to compete but must stay healthy.

With Draisaitl back, Edmonton gains a proven playoff weapon as it begins another push for the Stanley Cup.
