Connor McDavid Embraces Gritty Wins as Oilers Push for Playoffs

Connor McDavid is not chasing style points. The Edmonton Oilers captain is focused on results as his team builds momentum at the right time. They are looking to qualify for the playoffs after losing twice in the Stanley Cup finals in 2024 and 2025.

After a 4-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, McDavid spoke with Gene Principe about the nature of recent wins.

“Yeah, that’s the type of winning you’ve got to do this time of year,” McDavid said. “It’s not the prettiest, but we’re getting it done. Contributions all over, good solid defense, good goaltending. It’s been good.”

Connor McDavid talks about Leon Draisaitl

The Oilers have now won three straight games, a run that follows a difficult stretch earlier in the season. McDavid led the way again with a goal and two assists, reclaiming the NHL scoring lead with 124 points in 74 games.

Zach Hyman added a goal and an assist, while Jack Roslovic and Matt Savoie also scored. Contributions across the lineup have helped offset the absence of Leon Draisaitl, who remains out with a lower-body injury.

“You’re never going to replace a guy like that,” McDavid said. “He’s a special guy, but as you said, we need it this time of year. We need to find ways to get wins in a weird kind of division here. We’ve got to punch our ticket to the dance. Everybody’s stepping up, as you said.”

Edmonton held firm under pressure, with timely saves and structured play closing out the win. The team is now 27-5-5 when scoring first, showing improved control in games.

Oilers Focused on playoff push

Despite sitting just three points behind Anaheim in the NHL‘s Pacific Division, McDavid kept the focus simple.

“We’re just trying to win games. That’s it,” McDavid said. “Trying to win games and get in and play good hockey. If it happens, it happens. If not, it doesn’t matter.”

That mindset reflects past success. Edmonton has handled playoff runs from lower seeds before, often starting on the road. The priority remains securing a spot rather than chasing position.

“We’ve just got to get in, and we feel pretty good about our chances,” McDavid said.

McDavid’s form continues to drive the push. He has five goals and four assists during a four-game point streak and leads the league with 31 goals since Dec. 1.

The Oilers are not chasing perfection. They are embracing hard wins, trusting their depth, and building momentum when it matters most.
